Initial skill assessment for Piano -30 minutes

The first lesson is an introduction lesson where your skills level will be assessed and jointly we'll create a plan that's right for you. This evaluation session is necessary to make sure we understand your expectations and so that the two of us can  assess your  strengths/weaknesses and determine jointly whether my training program can help you.

We recommend that you play something that will “showcase” your piano skills.

Two Month Initial written contract Period

Taking lessons for one month doesn't really give enough time to give your lessons a fair try. We have a two month minimum for starting lessons . It takes some time to learn how to create a nice sound from the instrument and really be able to enjoy it.

I have piano and voice students as young as age 5 and many adult students as well. All lessons are tailored to meet the individual goals of each student and the techniques taught allow you to perform music of any style.

If you are a beginner you do not need any materials for your first lesson. After your first lesson I will tell you what materials you will need to purchase and where you can purchase them from. If you are intermediate or advanced then bring any materials you have studied before with you to the first lesson.

I offer lessons on a weekly basis because I need to be able to check and correct your form on a weekly basis. If you wait two weeks between lessons then you may be performing certain tasks incorrectly and reinforcing a bad habit for two weeks.

           Method of Instruction

Piano lessons are taught generally using Alfred’s Basic Piano Library series for lesson books. If you have a student who has already started with a different series of lesson books, that’s okay, we can continue that series if you like.

Through experience with many different piano instruction books, I have found the Alfred’s method of instruction to be excellent for children in ranges levels from Level 1A-Level 6.

Each student will be required to purchase the Alfred series books through me or at a local music store. Beyond the music lesson books, I asked each student to pick out pieces that they enjoy listening to, whether it is classical, jazz, country, rock, etc. encouraging a student to learn music they love, rather than only teaching them unfamiliar pieces in a lesson book can be inspiring and motivating.

          Benefits of Piano lessons
Concentration :Reading music requires Total concentration. While playing the piano the child must concentrate on reading 2 lines of music, use 10 fingers, both ears and one foot. I’d like to see you do this
          1. Hand-Eye coordination
          2. Self discipline through weekly lessons/practice
          3. Strengthens the memory and visual skills
          4. Self confidence
          5. Lifelong skills of goal accomplishment
          6. Creativity
          7. Piano is the “spring board” to learn other musical instruments

Arriving on Time

If you arrive more than five minutes early and I am teaching a lesson, please wait outside until your lesson time. Some students are easily distracted or are very shy about playing in front of other people. I want to make sure every student gets their full piano lesson without interruption.

Questions or problems concerning Piano lessons
Please let me know if you or your child has any problems or questions about your child’s private lessons. You can call anytime and I will be happy to help you. As a parent and a piano instructor, I realize it can be frustrating for parents who have never played an instrument to answer their child’s music questions at home. By sharing your concerns, I will be better equipped to make piano lessons a positive experience for both you and your child.

          Common Misconceptions About Practice

A common misconception is that a parent should not have to remind their child to practice. When a child complains about practice or doesn’t practice without reminders parents are often misconstruing these normal behaviors as a sign that the child doesn’t want to take piano or isn’t interested. It is normal for children avoid practice. After all practice is hard. But as we all know, great accomplishments do not come easy. Practice can be grueling at times, but improvement in any instrument or any activity requires hard work.

Every student (and teacher) has days when they don’t feel like practicing, but we all do things we don’t want to do when we are working towards something valuable. Getting your kids to practice when they don’t want to is just part of the process when your child is learning.Parents often give up on piano because they are tired of resorting to constant nagging about practice. Remember, teaching a child to stick to something and take the committed path is an important life lesson.
